Side by side comparison of natural granite countertop versus engineered white quartz countertop, both popular choices for Toronto kitchen renovations

Choosing between granite and quartz countertops is one of the biggest decisions in any kitchen renovation. Both look stunning, both last decades, and both come with strong opinions from designers and homeowners alike. After fabricating and installing over 800 countertops across Toronto and the GTA, we wrote this guide to give you a clear, honest answer based on real experience, not marketing claims.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Quartz wins for most Toronto homeowners: lower maintenance, more design choices, slightly cheaper

  • Granite wins for cooks and outdoor kitchens: handles direct heat

  • Quartz price range: $45-$130 per sq ft installed in Toronto (2026)

  • Granite price range: $60-$150 per sq ft installed in Toronto (2026)

  • 95% of our Toronto clients choose quartz today

Quick answer: For most Toronto homeowners renovating a kitchen today, quartz is the better choice thanks to lower maintenance, a more consistent appearance, and better stain resistance. Granite still wins for those who want a one-of-a-kind natural stone look and don't mind annual sealing.

But the full picture depends on your priorities. Here's the complete comparison.

What Is Granite?

Granite is a natural igneous rock formed from cooled magma deep underground. It's quarried in large blocks, cut into slabs, polished, and installed as countertops. Each granite slab is completely unique. No two pieces share the same pattern.

Granite is composed of feldspar, mica, and quartz minerals. The result is one of the hardest natural stones available for countertops, second only to diamond and a few other minerals on the Mohs scale.

Granite Pros

  • One-of-a-kind appearance. Every slab has unique veining, colour variation, and natural patterns. No two kitchens with granite ever look identical.

  • Heat resistant. You can place hot pans directly on granite without damage. This is the only countertop material that handles direct heat without precaution.

  • Extremely hard. Resistant to scratches from knives and most kitchen tools.

  • Adds property value. Real estate listings in Toronto consistently mention granite as a selling feature.

  • Long lifespan. Properly maintained granite lasts 30+ years.

Granite Cons

  • Requires annual sealing. Granite is porous. Without sealing, it absorbs liquids: wine, oil, coffee, and stains permanently.

  • Edges can chip. Sharp impacts at corners can break small pieces off.

  • Limited colour choices. You're working with what nature provides. Bright colours and patterns are rare.

  • Visible seams. Larger kitchens often need multiple slabs, and seams in granite are harder to disguise than in quartz.

  • Higher upfront cost. Premium granite slabs in Toronto run $100-$150 per sq ft installed.

What Is Quartz?

what-is-quartz

Quartz countertops (sometimes called "engineered stone") are made by combining about 93% ground natural quartz with 7% polymer resins and pigments. The mixture is pressed into slabs, cured, and polished. The result looks like natural stone but performs better in everyday kitchen conditions.

"After 8+ years of installations, the #1 reason our Toronto clients choose quartz is simple: zero maintenance. They don't want to think about resealing every year."

The key brands you'll see in Toronto: Caesarstone, Silestone, HanStone, Cambria, and MSI. Each offers slightly different finishes and warranties, but the manufacturing process is similar across all major brands. (We compared them in detail in our Best Quartz Brands Guide)

Quartz Pros

  • No sealing ever. The resin makes quartz completely non-porous. Nothing absorbs into the surface.

  • Stain-resistant. Wine, coffee, oil, tomato sauce: wipe and forget.

  • Hygienic. Non-porous surface means bacteria, mold, and mildew have nowhere to hide. Ideal for kitchens.

  • Consistent appearance. What you see in the showroom is what you get on installation day. No surprises with veining or colour variation.

  • Massive design selection. Hundreds of patterns, including realistic marble looks, solid colours, terrazzo styles, and bold modern designs.

  • Better seam concealment. Resin-based composition allows for tighter, less visible seams between slabs.

  • Lower price point. Toronto pricing for quartz starts around $50 per sq ft installed, compared to $60+ for granite.

Quartz Cons

  • Not heat-proof. Quartz handles temperatures up to 400°F, but sustained heat or sudden temperature changes from a hot pan can cause cracking. Always use trivets.

  • Not for outdoor kitchens. UV exposure causes quartz colours to fade over time. Granite is the better choice outdoors.

  • Heavy. Quartz slabs are extremely dense. Professional installation is mandatory. DIY is genuinely dangerous.

  • Less "natural" feel. If you want pure natural stone with all its imperfections, quartz can feel too uniform.

Granite vs Quartz: Side-by-Side Comparison

side-by-side
Stone Wizards team installing custom quartz countertop in a Toronto kitchen renovation, professional fabrication and installation process

Durability

Both materials are extremely durable, but in slightly different ways. Granite is harder (rates 6-7 on the Mohs scale), so it resists scratches better. Quartz is more flexible thanks to its resin content, so it resists cracks and chips better. In real kitchen use, both will outlast laminate, butcher block, and most other countertop materials by decades.

Winner: Tie. Both excel in real-world conditions.

Maintenance

This is where quartz wins clearly. Granite requires resealing once a year to maintain its stain resistance. Skip a year, and you risk permanent stains from spilled wine or oil. Quartz needs nothing beyond soap, water, and a cloth. After 8+ years of installations across Toronto, this is the #1 reason our clients choose quartz.

Winner: Quartz.

Heat Resistance

Granite handles hot pans directly off the stove with no protection. Quartz can crack from sudden temperature changes; always use trivets or hot pads. If you cook seriously and forget to grab a trivet, granite forgives. Quartz doesn't.

Winner: Granite.

Stain Resistance

Quartz is non-porous. Nothing penetrates the surface. Granite is porous and absorbs liquids unless properly sealed (and even then, sealing wears off). Coffee, wine, oil, and acidic foods like tomato can all stain unsealed granite within minutes.

Winner: Quartz.

Appearance

Subjective, but here's the honest answer: granite gives you completely unique, organic patterns that vary from slab to slab. Quartz gives you predictable, consistent appearance you can see in advance. If you love natural variation and "no two are alike" character, granite wins. If you want to know exactly what your kitchen will look like before installation, quartz wins.

Winner: Personal preference.

Price (Toronto, 2026)

Quartz is generally more affordable than granite at the entry and mid-range levels. Premium designer brands (Cambria, certain Caesarstone collections) can cost as much as high-end granite. Here are our current Toronto installed prices:

  • Quartz: $45-$130 per sq ft installed (most projects fall in $60-$95 range)

  • Granite: $60-$150 per sq ft installed (most projects fall in $85-$110 range)

Both prices include fabrication, edge finishing, installation, and basic cutouts for sink and cooktop. Plumbing hookup and old countertop removal are usually quoted separately.

Winner: Quartz (slight edge for most projects).

Resale Value

In Toronto's real estate market, both granite and quartz are seen as premium upgrades. Quartz has overtaken granite as the more "modern" choice in newer condos and contemporary renovations. Granite still holds value in traditional kitchens and luxury homes. Either material adds significant resale value compared to laminate.

Winner: Tie (depends on home style).

Which Should You Choose?

After installing over 800 countertops across Toronto and the GTA, here's the honest breakdown of who picks what:

which-to-choose
Modern minimalist Toronto kitchen with pure white quartz countertop and contemporary cabinetry
Traditional kitchen with warm earth tone granite countertop and wood cabinetry, classic Toronto home renovation style

Choose Quartz if:

  • You want low-maintenance and don't want to think about resealing

  • You have kids who spill things regularly

  • You want to know exactly what your kitchen will look like before installation

  • You're renovating a condo or modern home

  • You cook with a busy family schedule and need stain resistance

  • Your budget is in the $45-$95 per sq ft range

Choose Granite if:

  • You love unique, one-of-a-kind natural patterns

  • You cook seriously and place hot pans directly on counters

  • You're matching a traditional or classic kitchen design

  • You're building an outdoor kitchen

  • You don't mind annual sealing as part of normal maintenance

  • You want a material with the longest possible track record (granite has been used for centuries)

In our Toronto projects, roughly 95% of clients choose quartz today. The reasons are consistent: easier daily life, more design choices, and slightly lower cost. But the 5% who choose granite are usually very happy with their decision, especially in classic or traditional kitchen styles.
